I was very disappointed with this book. Although we enjoyed White's later books (Charlotte's Web and Trumpet of the Swan) immensely, this one seems like a "first novel"--and a very hopeless one at that. I'm glad I previewed the ending before reading the second half of the book to my children. Stuart runs away from his loving family, without any notice or regret, to chase after a bird that you don't even know if he finds or not. We won't be finishing it.
